Poop.

Have you ever wanted to poop for someone? Because I do right now. Ave has been experiencing her second bout with constipation this entire week. It's not that she isn't going, per se, but she is trying so hard and all that effort is resulting in...not a lot. If you know what I mean.

I don't know what caused it except that I gave her bananas and corn in the same day a few days ago and then some applie slices. And it went downhill from there or maybe not quite downhill. Maybe it just stopped there. You know? Everything just stopped.

Lunch today? Bran muffin, prune juice, apple yogurt and peas. Not exactly tasty, but all "loosening" foods.

Help?

  1. I just read this from Dr Greene.com. You probably know most of this anyway and it sounds like you are on the right track with prune juice.

"Bananas, rice cereal and applesauce all tend to produce firmer stools. Carrots and squash are constipating for some babies. Pears, peaches, plums, apricots, peas and prunes make stools softer. By balancing the diet, you can often keep the stools comfortably mid-range. If the stools are still too firm, juice is the gentlest medicine to soften them up. Apple juice twice a day is a good bet. If this doesn't work, prune juice is even better. Also, when your son is straining you might want to put him in a tub of warm water. This will relax his muscles and make the stool easier to pass."

Funny how our issues are over nap and poop dilemmas. No one understands the enormity of these issues until they are a mother...

Maybe her lunch yesterday will kick in today.

  2. It sounds like you're doing the right thing Missy. We've had that problem! And it's true...he looked like he was in so much pain.

Warm baths always help me. Mabye try them more often until she gets over it. Otherwise, can you give her a couple of sippy cups of juice? You could always try children's glycerine suppository as a last resort. It is a safe, natural laxative that the hospital reccomended when we first brought Cole home after birth. (You can get it at any pharmacy. They only have childrens- not infant- so they will tell you to cut off the "tip" and use that part for Avery.)
